Annual Village Rounders Match 2004
A huge crowd turned out on 9th July at King George's Field to witness the sublime to the ridiculous and everything in between, indulging in England's answer to basketball.

Of the 300-odd people present, nearly 60 were taking part, representing six teams; namely SWMC, Church, WI, School, PTA and Baden Powell. John Woodhouse, captain of last year's winners SWMC, decided that in order to celebrate the 10th year of this event, the players should wear fancy dress in a manner befitting the team they represented, & here are some of them ...

Vintage Postcards of Sonning

Postcards have been used in Britain since they were first introduced by the Post Office in 1870 with pre-paid stamps. The address was written on one side of the card and a brief message was written on the other. There was no picture.

In 1894 the Post Office allowed the posting of commercially manufactured postcards bearing adhesive stamps. A standard postcard size of 4.¾” x 3½” was introduced a year later. The address was written on one side and the reverse bore a small picture leaving sufficient space to write a message.

In 1902 the Post Office allowed pictures to appear on the front of postcards with both a message and address on the back. Postcard manufacturers began to issue cards with a line drawn down the middle of the back to show where the message and address should be written. These became the standard, still used today, of picture postcards with a ‘divided back’.

These picture postcards of Sonning & Sonning Eye have all been in the public domain at one time or another & have been found as such. sonning.net accepts no responsibility if it transpires that any of these images are now privately owned or subject to copyright.
