- When the project started back in 1997, the variety of tree and shrub
species was extremely limited, with Bramble, Horse Chestnut, Elm and
Hawthorn predominating.
- Those species still occur in the site, but thanks
to major native tree planting and hedgerow restoration, we now have
24 species of tree and
shrub in the site including many berry-bearing species such as Spindle,
Dog Rose, Blackthorn and Wild Honeysuckle, which are excellent for
attracting birds in autumn and winter.
- This variety of plants will also
lead to a steady increase in the variety of insects found in the site.
At present we have recorded 150
moths species
during moth-trapping with a Mercury Vapour lamp, but this is likely
to rise to over 200 over the next few years.
- The Friends of Ali’s
Pond volunteers have also planted native hedgerow wildflowers, including
Bluebell, Primrose, Snowdrop, Foxglove
and White Campion.
