- The meadow area has been created from a patch of what was amenity
grassland less than 10 years ago. Wildflower plants and seeds have been
introduced to the site in the last 6 years and now species such as Cowslip,
Black Knapweed, Field Scabious, Bird’s foot Trefoil and Yellow
Rattle are spreading steadily each year.
- The variety of wildflowers in
turn attracts a wide variety of insects including butterflies such
as Meadow Brown, Gatekeeper, Small Copper,
Common Blue and Large Skipper, and brightly coloured day-flying moths
such as Cinnabar and Five-spot Burnet.
- Every year in late August the
meadow is mown and the cuttings are removed to help reduce the fertility
of the site, which gives the wildflowers
a chance to compete with the tall grasses which previously dominated
the area.
